1. Set-Up Utilities

Before you move in, make sure to confirm who the providers are in the area for your electricity/gas, water, internet, and any other utilities. By calling them beforehand to set up your account and schedule the activation date, you can ensure the utilities will be up and running on move-in day.

2. Apply for a Change of Address

We all know how frustrating it can be when you don’t get your mail. Before your move-in date, make sure to file for a change of address to avoid this annoyance. To do this, you can either go to your local post office and ask for a mover’s guide packet or you can do it online at the official postal service website.

3. Take Proactive Pest Control Measures

It’s never too early to take preventative measures with your new home. Using pest control services before moving in can potentially prevent pests from invading your home in the future.

4. Paint, Paint, Paint!

Whether the walls need a refresh or a brand-new color, you’ll want to make sure to get any painting you need done at least 24 hours before you move in to allow the paint to dry. If you are still deciding on colors, get to know different paint color combos that work well together.

5. Measure Room Dimensions for Planning out Furniture

It can be easy to get ahead of yourself and start picking out furniture and design options. Before doing so, you’ll want to measure each room to know the sizes of what you can work with. When planning out ways to design your room/home, make sure to consider any baby proofing or pet proofing you may need.

6. Declutter Your Old Possessions

Your new home can be an opportunity for a fresh start. Before you move, consider creating a donation pile for any unwanted clothes, furniture, dishware, or décor items that you won’t be needing in your new home. This will help you save time packing and will make moving-in a little less cluttered and stressful.

7. Research Your New Neighborhood

Whether you’re moving states, or simply moving to a new area of town, it could be helpful get a lay of the land. You can either take a day to drive around your new neighborhood, or do a quick online search of nearby grocery stores, popular restaurants, or outdoor parks for your family and pets to enjoy!
