How To Keep Your House Clean & Organized

Sticking to routines can be tough, especially when it comes to cleaning your home. Sometimes even the smallest messes can feel overwhelming to tackle, but we have found that checklists are great tools for keeping your home organized throughout the week.

To avoid feeling overwhelmed by housework, we suggest that you break your cleaning tasks into manageable pieces. Having a checklist of cleaning tasks to do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis will not only help you stick to a routine, but it will also make it easier for you to stay motivated!

Not all chores require the same level of effort. While making your bed can take a few minutes, deep cleaning your couch cushions could be a full day's work. That is why it's beneficial to breakdown your chores for different areas of your home based on how often they need to be done.

We have created a helpful checklist that outlines daily, weekly, and monthly chores for each of these areas of the home: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, office/flex room, and garage/outdoor spaces. Print out this home cleaning checklist and stick it an area you will likely see every day like your bathroom mirror or refrigerator door.

Getting Prepared to Clean Your Home

Often the most difficult part of keeping a clean home is staying motivated to keep up with the constant task list. Without consistency in your cleaning routine, it can be difficult to avoid clutter that accumulates from daily life. Just as a dusting pan is vital to picking up dirt swept up from a broom, motivation is the tool that supports house cleaning habits that can make a difference in the look and feel of your home. Without this motivation, keeping up with your cleaning schedule can fall by the wayside.

Here are some helpful tips for staying motivated while cleaning:

  • Turn on some music that you enjoy! Something upbeat will help boost your energy.

  • Prep a reward for yourself when you're done cleaning like your favorite sweet treat.

  • Do you have a tendency to quit before cleaning is completed? Try setting an alarm to complete a "cleaning hour". After this hour, take a break and revisit your cleaning checklist to see what’s next.

Organize First, Clean Second

Before you can deep clean every corner of your home, it's important for your things to find their place. Organizing your belongings is an easy first step when cleaning your home and helps make all subsequent steps easier and potentially more effective.

Need some organizational pointers? Shea Homes has you covered!

  • Make a point to organize the most used parts of the house first. For instance, once the chaotic kitchen is already organized, tackling the rest of the house will seem like a breeze.

  • Organizing your belongings can put a spotlight on areas of the home that need some extra attention or are often overlooked. Sometimes the places that go unseen are the most necessary to clean.

  • Make sure you have all the supplies you need for cleaning countertops, dusting surfaces, and scrubbing sinks. If you want to avoid using harsh chemicals when cleaning your home, check out our list of green cleaning essentials.

  • Organizing does not always mean picking up the towels off the floor. Creating a cleaning plan to get into the mental space where you are ready to tackle your list could decrease your time spent cleaning. Breaking your cleaning plan down by daily, weekly, and monthly tasks can simplify your cleaning routine.
