Well that didn’t take long, did it? 2018 is almost one for the books, which means it’s time to take a look forward at the design trends 2019 will bring with it. Whether you’re buying a new home or revamping the home you’ve loved for years, here are five of the focal points designers will be switching up in the coming year. We’ve peeked into the newest Shea Signature™ community, Azure, to see these trends in action.

Flowers and Other Natural Elements
Succulents had their time in the spotlight in 2018, but 2019 brings with it more color and more variety. Flowers and floral patterns occupy a design Goldilocks-zone between the abstract and concrete and can add fun splashes of color and life to your home; look at how they’re used to brighten these lower level living spaces. Look to use exaggerated proportions and contrasting colors to emphasize the modern twist on this classic staple.

Artisanal Fixtures
In keeping with the naturalistic theme, decorators are looking towards locally made, artistic lighting fixtures to add interest to the most-used spaces in homes. Vintage elements, in particular, will be making a comeback, like sconces and pendants. Buying from local artisans not only supports your local economy but will give you a unique piece of culture that is sure to be a talking point at your next get-together.

Bolder Backsplashes
Light fixtures aren’t the only way to punch up the details in your kitchen; add some interest and texture with a new backsplash. Go bold with a bright color or uniquely local recycled materials (another big trend to keep an eye on next year), or opt for something a little more subtle, like the textured tile you see here. It’s a simple change that can take your kitchen from ‘bleh’ to ‘beautiful’.

Light Wooden Floors
Something just feels right about this light wooden floor. Whether you choose birch, light oak, or anything else that strikes your fancy, these floors find a perfect balance: modern, yet classic; casual, yet luxurious; open, yet cozy. With the extra light these floors reflect, they add an airy feel to any home that can drastically improve the mood of a space without sacrificing comfort.

Eco-friendly
Not a new trend by any means, but eco-friendly design will take its rightful place in the driver’s seat in 2019. If it’s both beautiful and easier on the planet, it’s in. That could be anything from choosing recycled materials wherever you can to full-out eco-centered design, like at Azure. Each residence includes small essentials like LED lighting and tankless water heaters, all the way to a highly efficient sealed attic system, designed with blown cellulose, a product with around 85% recycled content, applied to the underside of the roof deck. This can lessen the summertime heat gain on air ducts, in an effort to reduce energy costs and increase homeowner comfort. Low-E windows let in light without the unwanted heat – in fact, the window and door systems were designed to reduce radiant heat entering the home by up to 75%. All of us at Shea Homes® are proud to build homes that help sustain our natural environment.
