“Paso,” as locals call it, is the kind of place that’s hard to put into words. This laidback town in between San Francisco and Los Angeles is ideally located, with all of California within easy access. Located 28 miles north of San Luis Obispo and 27 miles inland from the magical Central Coast and its gorgeous beaches, Paso Robles is a favorite among Californians, tourists, and everyone in between…and for good reason! World Atlas just named Paso as CA best retirement location in an article found here. Here are a few things Nevina homeowners will love about this charming historic town.

The scenery – El Paso de Robles means “The Pass of the Oaks,” a name that pays tribute to the beautiful, massive live oak trees that are part of the character of the area. Aside from the trees, Paso’s landscape is stunning. The drive on Paso’s “gateway to the sea,” Highway 46, from Route 101 to the Pacific Coast Highway is truly unforgettable, revealing hillside vineyards and breathtaking vistas of the Santa Lucia Mountains and the California coastline.

The wine – Paso Robles is best known for its vast and picturesque wine country, which has more than 200 wineries, producing more than 60 wine grape varieties—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Chardonnay. There are small, family-owned wineries, highly acclaimed estate vineyards, wineries with Michelin Star farm-to-table restaurants, and secluded tasting rooms with panoramic views of the Paso hills. If you’re a wine lover, you’ll be in heaven in Paso Robles.

The food – Paso isn’t just a world-class wine destination. It’s also a foodie’s paradise, with an impressive array of restaurants—from comfort fooderies to two Michelin-starred and three Michelin Recommended restaurants. You can dine in the wine country, the authentic downtown, or in the vibrant dining/wine tasting/distillery/brewery industrial hub, Tin City, just a few miles south of town. Paso Roblans are proud of their traditional Mexican food, farm-fresh California cuisine, pizza joints, and cowboy supper clubs with tasty barbeque fare. But that’s not all! Whether you crave fresh-from-the-sea fare, Italian, Mediterranean, or traditional American cuisine, Paso has all kinds of popular local favorites.

Downtown Paso – Downtown was established in 1889 and is full of charm, with a cute town square centered around the City Park. This is a popular spot for picnics, festivals, and fun events like the Paso Robles Wine Festival, Olive Oil Festival, Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, and Summer Concert series. Many Paso wineries have tasting rooms downtown, and there are even distilleries and craft breweries in town as well. Stroll the local shops—from clothing boutiques to antiques stores, from artisan galleries to locally sourced gourmet food stores.

Outdoor activities – In between wine tasting and dining, there’s lots to do outside in Paso and the nearby area. Lake Nacimiento 20 miles northwest of town has hundreds of inlets and coves to explore by boat, kayak, or paddleboard as well as miles of hiking trails in its surrounding hills and woods. Lake San Antonio a little further to the north is perfect for boating, fishing, and even shoreline camping. When you’re feeling adventurous, Cerro Alto just 20 minutes southwest offers a hike to one of the highest points in the county, which has sweeping vistas all the way to Morro Bay. San Luis Obispo has even more awesome hiking. Golfers are in luck: Paso has 10 courses within a 30-minute drive of downtown, including Hunter Ranch Golf Course and the newly remodeled Paso Robles Golf Club.

Location, location, location – Did we mention already that Paso Robles is close to spectacular beaches like Cayucos, Morro Strand, and Pismo Beach? It’s worth repeating! From there, hop on iconic Highway 1 for an awe-inspiring drive or full-on road trip along the Pacific Coast, whether you head north toward Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey, and San Francisco, or south toward San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles. And speaking of SLO, this hip, historic college town with excellent hiking, dining and shopping is only a 25-minute drive straight down the 101. You really can’t beat the location of Paso Robles, which is close to so many incredible cities, beaches, and sights.
